Nicole’s story begins in a single-parent household, where she faced childhood trauma from a family friend’s abuse. This set her on a path of substance use and addiction, starting with alcohol at the tender age of eleven and eventually escalating to cocaine and methamphetamine.
Despite these challenges, Nicole managed to maintain functioning, working, and attending school, even as her addiction deepened. Her journey to recovery was marked by significant turning points, including incarceration and her mother's intervention when she was found wandering the streets. Nicole speaks candidly about the complexities of her family dynamics, including the feelings of inadequacy stemming from her father's absence and creating a new family.
These personal struggles were compounded by the harsh realities of addiction, which led her to Skid Row and encounters with law enforcement.
