The Gift of Desperation: Choosing Yourself and Finding Purpose with Misty Gomel
Episode Overview
- Recovery can start with what Misty calls the "gift of desperation"—finally admitting nothing is working and accepting help.
- Time sober matters less than the ongoing choice to "choose yourself", even if that choice has only lasted an hour so far.
- Seeing and naming someone’s strengths (like simply saying "you’re smart") can radically shift how they see their future.
- Sustainable recovery is treated as a lifestyle built on faith, clear focus and strong fellowship, rather than a quick fix.
- Practical support like skills assessments, CV building, interview prep and training links helps people step into meaningful work after treatment.
“The most powerful decision is ‘I can’t do this. Nothing I’m doing is working. I’m in the gift of desperation.’”
What can we learn from those who have battled addiction? This conversation between host Nichole and guest Misty Gomel offers a raw, hopeful look at recovery, purpose, and what Misty calls "the gift of desperation". Misty spent 22 years in active addiction, moving through jail, prisons, psych wards, rehabs and family estrangement. She explains that real change only began when she became, in her words, "out of ideas" and finally surrendered: "The most powerful decision is ‘I can’t do this.
Nothing I’m doing is working. I’m in the gift of desperation.’" From that point, she was able to be teachable and start rebuilding her life. Today, Misty is a Career and Life Coach with Hope Inspired Ministries, working inside The Foundry’s nine‑month residential faith‑based recovery programme. She meets people around the three‑month mark, when routines are forming and a new way of living is just starting to feel possible.
Through assessment tests and one‑to‑one coaching, she helps them see strengths they’ve often never been told they have. Someone once simply told her, "Misty, do you realise you're smart?" and it changed everything; now she’s doing that for others. You’ll hear how her team helps participants "dream big again", polish "sparkly" CVs, prepare for tough interview questions about gaps, and link into college credits or ministry‑funded training, like real‑estate internships.
Misty frames recovery as a lifestyle rather than something you tack on: "I don’t add recovery to what I’m doing. I am recovery." Her own foundation comes down to three "F‑words": faith, focus and fellowship. Misty also hosts "The Fixed Fight" podcast, centred on recovery and Jesus, giving space for people to share stories of change without watering down their faith.
Anyone curious about choosing themselves, whether for an hour or a lifetime, may find this conversation a nudge to ask: when did you start choosing you?
