Saving Glass from the Trash with Danielle Ruttenberg

Hippie Haven Podcast: How To Live A Harmonious Life

My guest today is Daniel Ruttenberg. She attended Tyler School of Art and then operated a glass art and fabrication business from 2007 to 2015. In 2016, she co-founded Remark Glass, a small business in South Philadelphia. Remark's mission, through the creation of small batch home accessories made exclusively from discarded bottle glass, is to build a more sustainable art form in manufacturing practice. Remark Glass has been recognized by the City of Philadelphia as its first Gold Level Zero Waste business. They were awarded the 2019 SustainPHL Business Impact Leader award and their Champagne Bottle Mug was recognized in the 2018 DesignPhilly Best in Design competition. Ruttenberg and her team have also been featured in ABC’s Localish, a 2019 DiscoverCard commercial, and HGTV home improvement show “Philly Revival”. Today we're talking about glass recycling, how one glass product is made into a different product, Danielle's new nonprofit and more.

Turning Bottles into Beauty: Remark Glass's Sustainable Artistry

There's no reason that we need to throw anything away. Remember, knowledge is power, so if you learned something from today's episode, share it with someone you know who'd also benefit from this free resource.

Ever thought about what happens to that wine bottle you toss in the recycling bin? For Danielle Ruttenberg, it’s the start of something beautiful. In this episode of the 'Hippie Haven Podcast', hosted by the eco-conscious Callee, we dive into the inspiring journey of Remark Glass, a small business in South Philadelphia dedicated to turning discarded bottle glass into stunning home accessories.

Danielle, who co-founded Remark Glass in 2016, shares her story of transforming waste into art and how her team is setting new standards in sustainable manufacturing. With a background in glass art and fabrication, Danielle's mission is clear: to create a more sustainable art form by using materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. Remark Glass has earned accolades like the 2019 SustainPHL Business Impact Leader award and recognition as Philadelphia’s first Gold Level Zero Waste business.

But it’s not just about the awards; it’s about community. Instead of relying on single-stream recycling, which often leads to contamination, Remark Glass engages directly with locals, encouraging them to bring their glass to the studio for sorting and processing. This hands-on approach not only reduces waste but also fosters a sense of shared responsibility for the environment. Danielle talks about the challenges they face, like dealing with contaminated glass, and the creative solutions they've implemented to overcome these hurdles.

She also introduces their new nonprofit initiative aimed at further promoting sustainability and environmental activism. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in eco-friendly practices, innovative recycling methods, or simply looking for some inspiration on how to make a positive impact. Tune in to hear how Remark Glass is turning trash into treasure and learn how you can be part of the change.
