Rapid Recovery: Rewiring Pain, Mindset and Addiction with Fred Amir

Episode Overview

  • Many spine "abnormalities" found on scans are common and do not reliably explain back or neck pain.
  • Chronic pain can become a conditioned response or "pain habit", similar to an addiction the body uses to avoid difficult emotions.
  • Shifting self-talk, body posture and mental imagery towards strength and confidence can reduce pain intensity.
  • Setting small, specific physical goals and rewarding each success helps re-train the brain away from pain-focused patterns.
  • Long-term relief often requires addressing repressed anger, dropping the victim role, and setting healthier limits and boundaries.
"He said this pain can become a conditioned response. It can become a pain habit, what I call pain habit or even a pain addiction."

What drives someone to seek a life without painkillers when chronic pain is screaming for relief? This conversation between host Omar Pinto and guest Fred Amir speaks directly to people in recovery who are stuck in the loop of back, neck, and body pain – and who are tired of being offered opiates as the only solution.

Fred, founder and president of Health Solutions and author of *Rapid Recovery from Back and Neck Pain: A Nine-Step Recovery Plan*, explains how his own crippling pain left him almost completely disabled in his thirties. Conventional medicine gave him pills, scary MRIs, and talk of surgery, but very little actual relief. As he tells Omar, he eventually realised that many spine “abnormalities” are common, and that, as he puts it, “this pain can become a conditioned response.

It can become a pain habit…or even a pain addiction.” The heart of the episode is a live coaching session where Fred treats Omar as a client. You’ll hear Fred walk him through a practical mind–body approach: setting exciting physical goals, using strong self-talk, striking “power poses”, visualising success, and even rewarding small wins with a teaspoon of favourite ice cream.

It’s simple, a bit funny at times, and surprisingly relatable if you’ve ever used substances – or pain itself – to avoid difficult emotions. Fred links chronic pain to repressed anger, stress, and people-pleasing, then connects recovery to boundaries, honest communication, and dropping the victim mindset. Omar regularly brings it back to addiction, showing how the same patterns that feed pain also feed alcohol and drug use.

If you’re sober (or trying to be) and stuck on pain meds, or just fed up with chronic aches that doctors can’t explain, this episode may get you asking a new question: what if your pain story doesn’t have to stay the way it is?
