My childhood was framed and formed by abuse. I was sexually assaulted by both parents beginning at the age of five and it continued until I was an early teen.
In this poignant episode of the Stop Child Abuse Now talk radio show, host Penalpi Bennett from Bellevue, Washington, introduces Michael Walter, a child abuse survivor and author from Scottsdale, Arizona. Michael bravely recounts his harrowing childhood experiences, detailing abuse that began at the age of five and continued through his early teenage years. His story is marked by physical violence, psychological torment, and a struggle for self-worth. Michael's journey to recovery is closely tied to his writing.
His book, 'Stolen Innocence,' serves as a therapeutic outlet, allowing him to confront and document his painful memories. Initially, writing was a personal form of therapy, but it evolved into a mission to help others facing similar challenges. Michael shares how he overcame the overwhelming nature of his experiences by editing his story into a format that could resonate with and support other survivors.
The episode also explores the mission of NAASCA, the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse, founded by Bill Murray. NAASCA is dedicated to addressing issues of childhood abuse and trauma through educating the public and offering hope and healing paths. The organization facilitates group discussions, therapy sessions, and interactive panels where survivors can share their stories and receive support.
Listeners are encouraged to participate in NAASCA's online support groups and panel discussions, which provide a safe space for survivors to connect and heal. Penalpi emphasizes the importance of taking small steps in recovery and highlights how even baby steps can lead to significant progress over time. The episode concludes with a call to action for adults everywhere: to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding children.
Penalpi and her guests remind listeners that it is our collective responsibility to speak up and protect the vulnerable. This episode serves as both a source of information and inspiration for survivors and advocates alike, showcasing the power of sharing stories to foster healing and change.
