When you think of the Amish, you might picture serene landscapes and a simple way of life. But beneath that tranquil exterior, some dark secrets are hidden. In this episode of 'Stop Child Abuse Now', Rachel Hawley and Eli Yoder from the Amish Rescue Mission lift the veil on abuse within their community. Rachel, raised in a secluded Amish community in Southern Minnesota, shares her journey from ignorance to advocacy.
Her turning point came in 2020 when a 12-year-old Amish girl became pregnant by her brother, prompting Rachel to co-found the Amish Rescue Mission. She created educational materials and took advocacy training to empower Amish children. Eli Yoder’s story is equally harrowing. Growing up in an old-order Amish community in Kenton, Ohio, he endured severe physical abuse. His numerous attempts to escape were thwarted until he turned 18.
