From Eight Balls to E‑Bay: Nate’s Wild Ride to Sobriety and Fatherhood

Episode Overview

  • Addiction can hide for years behind achievements, humour and being the “fun” heavy drinker before the consequences become obvious.
  • Resentments — towards others and yourself — can silently fuel substance use and need honest attention in recovery.
  • Reaching out, or answering the phone when someone checks in, can be the difference between continuing to spiral and choosing help.
  • Structured support such as rehab, sober housing and regular meetings can provide the routine and community needed to stay sober.
  • Finding a new passion or “healthy obsession” can replace the buzz of substances and make a sober life feel genuinely rewarding.
Sometimes you have to realise that you're not the only person in this world, that there are other people that rely on you. And the only way that I can make her life what it should be is by staying sober.

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This talk from Nate at the Bouldin Group drops you straight into the chaos, the comedy, and the consequences of addiction – then walks you back out the other side. Nate starts with his early years in Massachusetts, where an obsessive love of books and trivia hinted at an "addictive personality" long before alcohol or drugs showed up.

From gifted classes and hundreds of school detentions to being the designated driver who secretly resented everyone else drinking, you’ll hear how the seeds of addiction were quietly being planted. Things escalate through university life, heavy weed use, intense drinking games and wild pride in being "such a good drinker." London study-abroad brings stronger beer, daily weed, and home-cooked psychedelics courtesy of a chemistry-whiz friend.

Back in the States, the pattern shifts to daily solo drinking, cocaine, and eventually an eight-ball-a-day habit that leaves him broke, paranoid and covered in scabs. Some of the hardest-hitting moments come when he describes doing cocaine while caring for his toddler daughter, and the psychotic spiral that led to CPS involvement and being banned from his local bar. Even his dealer eventually says, "You look horrible.

You need help." From there, the story turns towards recovery: a life-saving phone call from a sober friend, a near-abduction that scares him sober, and a transformative stay at Ranch House Recovery and a sober house. Nate shares how step work, especially the fourth step, helped him release deep resentments – including against himself – and rebuild a life he actually likes.

Today he talks about his thriving vintage clothing side business, a love for his almost-four-year-old daughter, and a new kind of high: "That high, it's way better than a high cocaine ever gave me." If you’ve ever wondered whether change is worth the effort, this one might make you rethink what’s possible.
