Stress

On the Battlefield

Addiction is fueled by stress - in particular, those with stressful childhoods are much more susceptible to addiction. In this episode, our hosts discuss the four trigger points of stress in our lives: uncertainty, isolation, loss of control, and conflict. When we look at the medical data on addiction, the situation seems hopeless; however, the recognition of the image of God in each and every human being gives unfathomable hope as we battle for sobriety. Solving the problem our way leads to sin & death, solving it God’s way (repentance and recovery) leads to life. For these reasons, what we really need is a total distrust of self and complete & daring trust in God alone.

Navigating Stress: A Path to Sobriety with Fr. Joseph and Fr. Michael

Solving the problem our way leads to sin & death, solving it God’s way (repentance and recovery) leads to life.

Stress is often the unseen force driving many into the arms of addiction. In this episode of 'On the Battlefield', Fr. Joseph Collins and Fr. Michael Marcantoni tackle this hidden culprit head-on. They break down the four major stress triggers: uncertainty, isolation, loss of control, and conflict, showing how these can pave the way to addiction. Drawing from medical data, they highlight how stress rewires the brain, making the struggle with addiction feel insurmountable at times.

But there’s a twist - they bring a refreshing perspective rooted in Orthodox spirituality. By recognizing the divine image in each person, they offer a beacon of hope. The hosts argue that while our methods often lead to despair, turning to repentance and recovery opens the door to life. They emphasize the need for community support, physical activity, and a daring trust in God.

The episode wraps up with a poignant reminder: the Christian journey isn’t about avoiding pain or stress but finding grace amidst it. Tune in for an enlightening discussion that blends science, faith, and practical advice for anyone grappling with addiction.
