From Jail Cells to Church Planting: Will & Mary Beth’s Rooted Recovery Story

Episode Overview

  • Very different childhoods can still lead to the same place of addiction and the same need for God.
  • Long-term sobriety is described as flowing from a spiritual awakening and relationship with Jesus, not the other way round.
  • Recovery Church gives people with addiction histories meaningful leadership roles earlier than many traditional churches.
  • Feeling unqualified is common, but encouragement from others can help people step into ministry and service.
  • Real forgiveness in families can transform relationships and release long-held resentment.
Sobriety is a byproduct of our relationship with him.

Get ready to be moved by real-life accounts of faith, relapse, and second chances as Studio RC shares conversations from the Rooted 2026 conference. Pastor Max sits down with Will and Mary Beth Modosicki, a couple who went from very different childhoods to the same desperate need for recovery and Jesus.

Mary Beth grew up as a pastor’s kid with the classic “white picket fence” family, while Will jokes that he was a “Christmas Catholic” whose life was surrounded by addiction: “Birthday parties, the keg was there. Funerals, the keg was there.” Despite those opposite starts, both ended up in active addiction and both reached a point where, as they explain, they simply couldn’t do life alone anymore.

You’ll hear how Will spent 17 years in and out of jail and treatment, and now celebrates nearly ten years sober, describing how God changed him so deeply that when a doctor offered painkillers, “it wasn’t even like a thought.” Mary Beth admits she once dismissed AA as “a cult” because she thought having Jesus meant she didn’t need the 12 steps—while also admitting she hadn’t opened her Bible in a decade.

The conversation digs into how Recovery Church lifts up new leaders quickly, giving people with messy pasts real responsibility and purpose. Will shares how others in Recovery Church kept telling him, “You can do this,” until he finally believed he was called to pastor and plant churches, even when he felt completely unqualified.

Mary Beth talks about the fear of becoming a pastor’s wife and how God “worked it all out and qualified us.” They close with powerful stories of forgiveness, including Mary Beth’s mum saying, “I forgave you for that years ago,” after hearing her amends. If you’re wrestling with faith, sobriety, or feeling unqualified, this honest chat might be exactly what you need to hear today—what step could you take next to let your roots go deeper?
