- The fruit of the Spirit is a single harvest expressed through qualities like love, joy, peace, patience and self-control.
- Pruning in spiritual life means letting go of comfortable but unproductive relationships, habits and patterns to make room for healthier growth.

- Gratitude practices such as lists, journals and verbal thanks act like fertiliser, strengthening awareness of growth and protecting spiritual fruit.
“Fruit is visible evidence of invisible work.”
What can we learn from those who have battled addiction and kept showing up, one day at a time? Studio RC’s Rooted #8 brings Pastor Max Ingram back to talk about the “fruit” of recovery – the visible signs that all that hidden work with God and the 12 steps is actually doing something.
Speaking openly as “an alcoholic… sober today only by the grace of God and the fellowship of the program,” Max connects recovery growth to the biblical image of trees and harvest. He explains that fruit is “visible evidence of invisible work” – the calm reaction, the slower anger, the quicker apology that quietly shows God has been at work beneath the surface.
Grounded in Galatians 5:22–23, he walks through the fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control – stressing that it’s one fruit, one harvest, produced by connection to God rather than self-improvement or behaviour polishing. It’s progress, not perfection. Max also spends time on pruning.
Using both gardening and business analogies, he talks about God trimming even healthy-looking branches: relationships that keep you stuck, habits that once helped but now drain you, patterns exposed through inventory, confession and amends. “The goal of pruning is greater health and greater fruit,” he explains, even when it feels like loss.
You’ll hear the Ninth Step Promises framed as fruit too – “a new freedom and a new happiness,” “we will know peace” – not rewards, but outcomes of spiritual alignment. Gratitude becomes the “fertiliser” that protects that fruit, with practical ideas like gratitude lists, journals, and simply telling people, “I appreciate you.” Aimed at people in recovery and those growing in Christian faith, this episode offers language, scripture and images that help you notice change, celebrate progress and stay rooted.
Where have you seen fruit in your own life lately, and are you taking time to thank God for it?
