Teen Mum, TikTok Chaos and a Second Chance: Gabby Egan on Sobriety

Episode Overview

  • Real change only started when Gabby heard another woman’s AA story and finally admitted, to herself, that she was the problem.
  • Arrests, overdoses and public fallout were not enough to break denial; genuine willingness came from an internal shift, not outside pressure.
  • The first year of sobriety felt like an identity death, but sticking with it led to clarity, freedom and a more stable sense of self.
  • Letting go of long-held resentments and silently forgiving those who caused harm helped release the grip of old trauma.
  • Sharing recovery openly – with family, online and in person – became a way for Gabby to stay accountable and support others on similar paths.
“It was in that moment that something clicked within me, and I was like, oh my gosh, all this time it's been me. I'm the problem.”

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This midweek Dopey session drops you right into a live event in Covington, Kentucky, where host Dave sits down with TikTok-famous creator and local business owner, Gabby Egan, to talk about teen pregnancy, military binge drinking, jail, and what finally pushed her into recovery. Gabby lays out her story with blunt honesty and a fair bit of humour.

She talks about becoming a mum at 13, chasing validation in the wrong places, and using alcohol, weed and pills to numb a deep sense of worthlessness. Later, in the army, she finds herself in a culture where "everybody hates their life" and drinking is the norm, all while trying to look like she has everything under control. Things escalate with high-profile arrests in Las Vegas and Nashville, both fuelled by booze and both splashed across the news.

Even then, she clings to denial: it was the drink being spiked, or someone else’s fault, never hers. The turning point comes in Los Angeles, when she’s invited onto a recovery podcast, walks into her first AA meeting, hears a woman with 20 years of sobriety share, and feels something snap into place: "All this time it's been me.

I'm the problem." From there, Gabby describes a brutally honest first year of sobriety: identity crisis, boredom, feeling like a "shell of a human". But she sticks with it, learns to like being at home, finds new freedom in abstinence, and talks about making peace with the traumatised 13-year-old still inside her. Alongside Dave’s own stories of methadone, grief, and the paradox of giving recovery away to keep it, you’ll get equal parts chaos, laughter and hope.

If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s really worth putting the drink down, this conversation might have you asking yourself some uncomfortable – and very necessary – questions.
