“We have an amazing God who is neither male nor female. He relates to us as both mother and father.”
How do people find hope in the darkest times? This episode of *Hope, Healing & Freedom* turns that question toward the character of God, asking what it means that both men and women are made in God’s image.
Host Cindy Whitman from Restoring the Foundations walks through the idea that, while it’s appropriate to relate to God as Father, scripture also presents what she calls “the mother heart of God.” Drawing from Genesis 1:27, she points out that “both male and female are created in the image of God, not just the male,” and challenges the habit of speaking about God in purely masculine terms.
Cindy brings in a string of Bible passages that highlight nurturing, comforting and protective imagery: God comforting “as one whom his mother comforts” in Isaiah 66, the picture of a mother eagle in Deuteronomy 32, a nursing mother in Isaiah 49, a protective bear and lioness in Hosea, and a hen gathering her chicks in Luke 13. These images are used to show a God who is fiercely protective, endlessly present in hardship, and tender toward wounded hearts.
She also shares her own struggle as a strong, less traditionally “nurturing” woman who bumped up against church stereotypes and questioned why God made her the way he did. Her journey towards accepting herself becomes an encouragement to anyone who has felt “there’s something wrong with me” because they don’t fit gender expectations.
For those carrying pain from imperfect parents, estranged children or past failures, Cindy keeps pointing back to healing, forgiveness and God’s steady love: “We have an amazing God who is neither male nor female. He relates to us as both mother and father.” It’s a gentle invitation to see God through a wider lens and to let that shape how you view yourself, your family and your recovery journey.
So, how might your healing shift if you allowed God to meet you with both fatherly strength and motherly comfort?
