As a recovering addict and alcoholic, I understand intimately that the addict and alcoholic's brain is wired fundamentally different and that in active addiction, the brain of the addict prioritizes their drug of choice above everything else and, to that end, often say and do things they wouldn't dream of doing when not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
