The External Nature of AddictionThe External Nature of Addiction
On the Battlefield
Today, our hosts discuss the aspect of addiction that leaves us trying to find peace, joy, and stress reduction through external means. Many relate addiction to the substance itself; however, the substance is but a symptom of the problem. Orthodox Christianity recognizes that we have an “us” problem - a fear of reality as it is. What we need, as always, is a life of repentance. We can spend a lifetime transferring our addictions from one thing to another, thinking, "if only _____, then I will be happy, then I will behave as a Christian". Dealing with the consequences of our life choices, and turning from them toward Christ, no matter how unbearable they seem, will ultimately lead to a better life. While we look for external solutions to our problems, we must remember that the Kingdom of God is within.

How do individuals turn their lives around after addiction? In 'The External Nature of Addiction,' Fr. Joseph Collins and Fr. Michael Marcantoni tackle the complexities of seeking joy and peace through external means, highlighting how addiction is often a symptom of deeper issues. The hosts explore the idea that our struggles are less about substances and more about a fear of reality and a lack of inner peace.
Orthodox Christianity's perspective on repentance is offered as a path to true happiness, urging listeners to look inward rather than outward for fulfilment. With a mix of light-hearted banter and deep spiritual insight, the episode encourages reflection on what drives us to seek comfort in the wrong places and how we can shift our focus to the internal work necessary for recovery.
It's a thought-provoking discussion that not only challenges the traditional views on addiction but also offers practical advice for anyone seeking to find contentment and healing. Are you ready to confront your own 'us' problem and embrace a life of repentance?
