From Hopeless to Ultramarathons: Ben Fraser on Community, Running and Recovery

Episode Overview

  • Shifting "I am" statements from self-criticism to simple, consistent actions can gradually reshape identity in recovery.
  • Starting with small, achievable movement – like daily walks – can build hope long before big races or ultras appear possible.
  • Finding a supportive running or activity-based community helps replace old using circles with healthy accountability and genuine care.
  • Publicly embracing recovery, rather than hiding it, can change how others see addiction and may inspire friends, family members and strangers.
  • Chasing connection, family and service can matter more than endlessly chasing ever-longer race distances or extreme goals.
We have to, well, I have to recover loudly.

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This conversation between coach Blu Robinson and New Zealand runner and dad Ben Fraser gives one very energetic answer: community, movement, and changing the story you tell yourself. Ben looks back just five years and contrasts two very different versions of himself. Back then, he describes having an "overwhelming sense of hopelessness", feeling lonely, unable to hold down work or relationships, and brought "to my knees" by alcoholism.

Today, he's approaching five years without alcohol, has lost around 60 kilos, runs marathons and ultramarathons, and coaches for Speed Freaks, a running-based recovery group. A big theme here is identity. Both Blu and Ben push back on defining themselves only as addicts. Ben explains how his internal script shifted from "I am" followed by insults, to simple, action-backed statements like "I'm someone who walks every day," eventually becoming "I'm Ben and I'm a runner".

It didn't happen overnight; it came from tiny, consistent actions and a lot of self-honesty. You'll also hear how community changed everything. Ben talks about starting alone, walking with podcasts in his ears, then taking the scary step of joining a local running group and, later, Speed Freaks.

He describes the power of accountability, of being wanted in a group, and of the gratitude circles where people move from being grateful just to be there, to being grateful for their own bodies, and finally for each other. Blu and Ben swap stories about isolation, leaving old drinking circles behind, and the joy of being cheered in public races while wearing a shirt that openly links you to recovery.

As Ben puts it, "We have to, well, I have to recover loudly." If you're wondering whether movement and community could change your recovery too, this chat might be the nudge you need.
