How Beliefs Shape Sobriety: James Swanwick on the Five Primary Drivers
Episode Overview
- Beliefs drive thoughts, feelings, actions and habits, which then shape life outcomes.
- Many drinkers carry old conclusions from childhood, such as "I'm not good enough" or "everything must be perfect."
- Feeling stuck with alcohol is often tied to limiting beliefs like "nothing works" or "I'll always be stop–start."
- Seeing a limiting belief as untrue and replacing it with a more helpful one changes thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
- Structured support and community can give a method that still holds when willpower runs out.
“Change your belief. Change your feelings. Change your action. Change your life.”
Speaking to the same executive and entrepreneur crowd who join his Project 90, Beyond 90 and Legends programmes, James breaks down what he calls the "five primary drivers": "What we believe determines what we think and what we think determines our feelings and how we feel determines our actions… and our habits determine the quality and ultimate outcome of our life." He shares how childhood experiences, critical parents or being picked on at school can lead to unconscious conclusions like "I'm not good enough" or "things always have to be perfect" – beliefs that quietly keep people stuck in drinking patterns.
How do people cope with the challenges of staying sober? James Swanwick heads out for a walk to the gym and talks straight to high-performing drinkers about the hidden engine behind their choices: belief. James links this directly to alcohol: many people who come to Alcohol-Free Lifestyle have already tried AA, therapy, apps, Dry January and moderation.
They often arrive with beliefs such as "nothing works" or "I'll always be stop–start", or they’re daily drinkers whose career still looks fine on the outside while marriage strain, worried children and health fears build in the background. Rather than focusing on willpower, James talks about replacing thoughts like "this is too hard" with questions such as "how can I do this?" and "this is part of the process".
He stresses that the only way to break a limiting belief is to see it as untrue – "to see that belief is a lie" – and then choose a more useful one that sparks different thoughts, feelings, actions and, over time, habits.
If you’ve proved you can quit but haven’t managed to stay stopped, this conversation might get you asking: what belief is really running the show for you – and what new one are you ready to try on?
