Every time I tried to control my drinking I wasn’t having fun, and every time I didn’t try to control it, terrible awful things happened.
Nalani's story is a compelling journey of recovery and transformation through the Alcoholics Anonymous program. Born into a world where gymnastics was her life from a young age, Nalani managed to avoid alcohol until the age of 17. Her first encounter with drinking was a chaotic night over Thanksgiving break during high school, which left her with hazy memories. It wasn't until college that Nalani's drinking escalated, coinciding with her decision to quit gymnastics.
Without the structure and discipline provided by gymnastics, Nalani found herself indulging in alcohol every weekend, alongside daily marijuana use. The turning point came when Nalani experienced a severe car accident, rolling her Jeep at high speed. This event made her realize how her higher power had been watching over her, as she survived with only fractures. The accident prompted her to stop using drugs, although alcohol remained a challenge.
Nalani recounts the emotional impact of waking up in the hospital to her father's plea for her to regain control over her life. As Nalani navigated relationships and personal losses, her drinking patterns fluctuated. She found herself in relationships with partners who drank similarly, exacerbating her struggles with alcohol. Despite these challenges, Nalani's steadfast commitment to her recovery journey through AA led her to discover a spiritual connection that transformed her life.
Her sobriety date of August 6, 2018, marks the beginning of a path to serenity and peace. Nalani emphasizes the importance of action and experiential growth within the AA program. She shares anecdotes from meetings, highlighting the necessity of perseverance and community support in the face of personal struggles. Nalani's recovery story serves as a beacon of hope for those seeking sobriety, demonstrating that transformation is possible with dedication and the right support system.
In her own words, Nalani encourages listeners to find a meeting that resonates with them, underscoring the life-saving impact of Alcoholics Anonymous. Her journey embodies the belief that recovery is a personal yet shared experience, driven by action and a willingness to keep coming back.
