Yana Khashper: From Darkness to Light Through Fitness and Community

It's so important to have these outlets and it's so important to not have shame, to not feel that they are somehow unworthy or fundamentally flawed. We're incredible people. We're mothers and fathers and friends and children. We're productive members of society. We're taxpayers, we hold government positions, we're just everywhere.

Imagine moving to a new country and feeling completely out of place. That's what happened to Yana Khashper, an immigrant from Russia who faced bullying and isolation in her new American school. Despite excelling academically and pursuing a career in social work, Yana struggled with her own demons. Addiction to alcohol and drugs eventually led her down a dark path, culminating in legal issues and even a suicide attempt. But Yana's story doesn't end there.

Through rehab and a newfound love for fitness and the outdoors, she turned her life around. Today, she co-runs ROCovery Fitness in Rochester, New York, a peer-led sober active community that offers support and a stigma-free environment for people in recovery. Yana's journey is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of community.
