How Your Playlist Shapes Your Emotional Sobriety

Episode Overview

  • Music affects emotional chemistry, so it’s important to notice how each song makes you feel and what thoughts it sparks.
  • Old favourites can either show emotional growth or keep you tied to past anger, confusion, or heartbreak.
  • Romantic and violent lyrics may feed fantasy, grief, resentment, or a biochemical pull towards anger.
  • Being deliberate about entertainment is a way to avoid “marinating” in sadness, anger, or embarrassment.
  • Re-listening to key songs as an EMSO student can act as a litmus test for current emotional sobriety and thought patterns.
Remember what you consume, you become.

Curious about how others manage their sobriety journey through everyday choices? This episode of Levelheaded Talk shines a light on something many people overlook: how music shapes emotional chemistry and emotional sobriety. Dr Andrea Vitz and co-host Jon Leon Guerrero chat about how songs from the past can anchor old emotions like anger, confusion, or heartbreak, and how revisiting them with “EMSO eyes” can reveal what those tracks are actually doing to your mood today.

Jon shares his own experience growing up during the rise of gangsta rap and says some songs still hold up for their production and cultural weight, while others now feel too rooted in his younger rage to keep in rotation. Andrea invites listeners to look at their playlists and ask simple but powerful questions: “What is the vibe? What is the tone? What is the theme? What is the emotion I feel?

What are the thoughts that I think?” She reminds everyone that music isn’t harmless background noise: “Remember what you consume, you become.” Whether it’s violent lyrics fuelling resentment, romantic ballads feeding fantasy and grief, or classical and jazz pieces carrying hidden pain, it all lands in the body as chemistry.

They speak about being deliberate with entertainment, not from a place of perfection, but because, as Andrea admits, “I’ve suffered in the chemistry, the pool of marinating in sadness and anger and embarrassment,” and now chooses to “command and rule” her thoughts as much as possible. By the end, you’re invited to run a little experiment: replay a favourite song from your past and compare how it makes you feel and think now versus then.

Does it support your emotional sobriety, or keep you stuck in an old story? Maybe it’s time for a playlist that matches the life you’re trying to create.
