“I think everybody has a mental health issue of some sort. Do I go crazy at times? Do I do dumb things and try and get away with it? Yeah. I'm down in the basement. I think that's kind of the care and feeding of my long-term sort of mental health glitch that is this addiction is treating that sort of anxiety thing that creeps up.”
Adam Banks' story is one of grit, resilience, and transformation. Growing up in a small town in Northern Wisconsin, Adam felt the need to hide his sexuality, leading him to start drinking in bars at just 15. The only requirement? A promise that a parent was with him. Desperate to escape his oppressive environment, he found inspiration in his neighbor, a pilot. Driven and motivated, Adam became one of the youngest pilots in his class.
However, the glamorous life of a pilot he envisioned turned out to be far from reality. Instead of adventure, he faced isolation—long hours in the cockpit followed by lonely nights in hotel rooms across the country. This solitude became fertile ground for his growing alcoholism. Adam began drinking up until the last minute he was legally allowed to before flying.
His addiction spiraled, especially on the fateful day of September 11th when he was in the air, grappling with the enormity of the tragedy unfolding below. In this episode of 'The Courage to Change: A Recovery Podcast', Adam opens up about his struggles with addiction and how he eventually found his way to sobriety. Now an addiction clinic owner, interventionist, and author, Adam's story is a powerful testament to the possibility of change and recovery.
His journey offers hope and valuable insights for anyone facing similar battles, making this episode a must-listen for those seeking inspiration and understanding.
