Quinn Harlow: From Addiction to Advocacy and Sobriety
Episode Overview
Quinn's early struggles with addiction and codependency Her battle with heroin and IV drug use The turning point and seeking help Insights into the challenges and victories of staying sober The impact of peer recovery specialists in the journey to sobriety
I had tried just smoking weed after I had been addicted to Xanax. And I was like counting sober days and everything. I was like, I'm going to be in Colorado because that was where, I think that was the only place that weed was legal at the time. Eventually I was like just doing dabs and weed wasn't enough. And then like, I couldn't hang out with anyone without doing, I couldn't go to school. I couldn't do homework. Like it still had this little hold over me, even though my life was a lot more manageable than it had been when I was doing Xanax. I knew that he knew where to get other drugs. There was like not even any thought in it because weed wasn't enough to like combat the pain of the breakup. It was enough to like get through day to day at that point. But it just came to a point where it wasn't. It was like an immediate thing. Yeah. Luckily Luckily when I relapsed, I had already had the experience trying that before and I saw where it was going, but I think I also needed to hear other people's experiences like in AA and everything. And that helped me a lot too.
Quinn Harlow's story isn't just another tale of addiction and recovery; it's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Growing up in New York, Quinn found herself hooked on sports and dance at an early age. But alongside these healthy passions, anxiety and depression began to creep in. By the time she started drinking and smoking weed, it was clear her relationship with substances was different from her peers. They filled a void nothing else could touch.
Her teenage years were marked by a co-dependent relationship that only fueled her need for drugs and alcohol. Despite getting into her dream art school, Quinn's addiction led her back home, where her parents tried everything, even putting alarms on doors and windows to keep her safe. Yet, addiction's grip was strong, and she soon spiraled into chaos. After multiple relapses and battles with heroin and IV drug use, Quinn finally found the strength to seek help.
Now sober for four years, she works as a peer recovery specialist, using her experiences to guide others through their own struggles. In this episode of 'The Courage to Change: A Recovery Podcast', Quinn shares her raw and candid journey, offering valuable insights into the highs and lows of sobriety. Her story is not just about overcoming addiction; it's about finding purpose and giving back.
