Choosing Faith Over Fear When the Future Feels Fragile
Episode Overview
- Faith and fear can coexist, but you can still actively choose faith in each moment.
- Prayer and community support can change both circumstances and perspective, even when outcomes vary.
- Medical opinions matter, but they do not have to be treated as the final word over your life.
- Reframing hard seasons as “tests” or “giants” can help you stand as a victor rather than a victim.
- Joy and humour are practical tools God can use to carry people through pain and uncertainty.
“He knows he can't steal our eternity, but goodness gracious, he wants to steal our hope of today.”
What can we learn from those who have battled addiction to fear, illness and uncertainty? This conversation between therapist and host Heidi Mortenson and Christian author Heidi Lee Anderson offers a raw, faith-filled look at what happens when life falls apart far earlier than expected. At 23, Anderson heard the words “You have Hodgkin’s lymphoma” and was immediately plunged into scans, chemo, radiation and a list of long-term risks that seemed to shadow every decade of her future.
She talks honestly about the three-week wait for answers, the “what if” spiral, and how “the enemy…can’t steal our eternity, but goodness gracious, he wants to steal our hope of today.” You’ll hear how a reluctant decision to share her story at church became a turning point. A stranger in the crowd – Ty, now her husband – messaged, “God wants you well,” and their friendship grew while she went through treatment.
Against medical expectations, Anderson later became mum to four children, which she calls “walking miracles”. The episode spends time on the mental and spiritual aftermath too: living for ten years under the shadow of possible secondary cancers, then feeling crushed when a new oncologist extended that uncertainty instead of closing the chapter.
Out of that place came her 100-day devotional, *All In All Yours*, shaped by the book of Joshua and the idea that some “giants” remain as training grounds rather than life sentences. There’s plenty here for anyone who knows fear, health anxiety or the weight of worst-case scenarios.
Expect gentle humour (including dating during chemo with a wig), straight talk about doctors and diagnosis, and a strong reminder that you’re “a victor, not a victim.” If your future feels wobbly right now, could this be the hope-filled story you need to hear today?
