Three Days Left to Live: Evan’s Fight Against Alcohol and Liver Failure
Episode Overview
- Heavy drinking can cause severe liver damage even without hangovers, shakes, or typical withdrawal symptoms.
- Using alcohol to numb trauma, heartbreak, and caregiving stress can quietly become a life-threatening dependence.
- Simple blood tests are a safer way to check liver health than relying on online symptom lists or self-diagnosis.
- Transplant teams and medical staff can be compassionate allies, but action must be taken before it’s too late.
- Choosing sobriety can be a way to honour both loved ones and the donor whose organ provides a second chance at life.
“After surgery, the doctor came in and he said, I'm so glad this went well because you had three days left to live.”
What remarkable journeys have people faced head-on against addiction? This episode follows Evan, a musician who thought alcohol was simply his "rock star potion" and a way to cope, until it nearly killed him. Evan shares growing up as an only child with older parents, inheriting his love of music from his mum, and later joining a band where drinking started as liquid courage on stage.
Over the years it shifted into a nightly ritual: shots of bourbon, tequila, and eventually endless gin and tonics to mute heartbreak, buried trauma from military school, and the crushing responsibility of caring for his mum as dementia took hold.
He explains that he never had hangovers, shakes, or classic withdrawal signs, and even went days without drinking, so he convinced himself it "couldn’t be that bad." Yet by late 2024 his body told a different story: severe swelling, ascites, jaundice, and a terrifying collapse at home that finally forced him to call 999. Hospital staff bluntly told him, "you're going to die," and later a liver team confirmed he needed a transplant or he wouldn’t survive.
With no insurance and his mum still needing care, Evan’s girlfriend married him in the hospital so he could be added to her cover. He was placed on the transplant list and, by early March 2025, received a liver from a 19-year-old donor who died from a drug overdose.
After surgery, a doctor told him, "I'm so glad this went well because you had three days left to live." Now sober, Evan talks about survivor’s guilt, the emotional weight of knowing a stranger’s organ keeps him alive, and his decision to honour that gift by staying alcohol-free and facing life with clear eyes.
If you’ve ever thought, "I don’t have the symptoms, so I’m fine," his story might make you stop and ask: what is alcohol really costing you, and is it time to get checked and make a change?
