He recalls a mate with a kidney stone in Los Angeles who ended up with a US$30,000 bill after a day in a hallway bed, and now just dodges debt collectors. Boyle talks about having full coverage through his wife, using an HSA for dental work and vitamins, and still wanting to avoid getting too deep into the American system.
By contrast, he raves about Irish healthcare: thorough GPs in Cork, helpful hospital staff and what he calls a "wall to wall fucking amazing" experience during treatment for his collapsed lung. Australia gets a mixed review: emergency care at top public hospitals is "incredible" and free, but GP care is "diabolically dog shit" and specialist access is slow and pricey unless it’s urgent.
India, he says, offers astonishing access: same-day MRIs, heart scans for around "80 bucks" and a plastic surgeon stitching his daughter’s face within hours. The flip side is aggressive itemised billing and harsher conditions for those without money. Through all this, Boyle’s humour keeps things light, even as he talks about drowning-on-fire pleurodesis in India versus a "cruise job" pleurodectomy in Ireland.
