Changing Your Inner Language with Avikal E. Costantino
Episode Overview
- Notice how often you speak in labels like “jealous” or “broken” and bring attention back to the actual experience in your body and feelings.
- Recognise the inner judge as an old survival programme that repeats the same messages and choose not to engage with its constant criticism.
- Shift from hiding to showing up, accepting that being seen means being both more powerful and more vulnerable.
- Practise self-inquiry with questions such as “Who am I?” and “What is freedom?” to connect with what feels deeply true inside.
- Cultivate gratefulness for everyday moments to strengthen trust in yourself and in life’s generosity.
“You need to stop hiding. You need to show up, no matter if you get hurt, if people like you or don’t like you. Because this is how I can grow up.”
Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This conversation on UK Health Radio’s *Feng Shui Your Way* takes a surprising turn into the power of language and how it shapes inner life, relationships and personal growth. Host Janine Lowe chats with international spiritual teacher and author Avikal E. Costantino about his book *A New Language – Flowing in Being*.
The focus isn’t on grand theories, but on the everyday words you use – “I should”, “I must”, “I’m just like this” – and how those phrases can quietly keep you stuck in old patterns, including around addiction, self-criticism and shame. Avikal shares his own journey, from feeling a “gap” between who he really was and the persona the world expected, to becoming a rebel and then realising that constant reaction wasn’t true freedom.
His turning point came with meditation and self-inquiry, centred on questions like “Who am I?” and “What is freedom?” – questions that many people in recovery will recognise. One of the most relatable parts of the episode is the discussion of the “inner judge”. Avikal explains that this judging voice started as a survival tool when we were children, but now runs like an outdated programme, still treating us as if we’re six or seven years old. His tip?
You can’t stop the judge from barking, but you can stop engaging with it and bring attention back to your real, present-moment experience. The book and conversation invite you to move from labels to lived reality: instead of saying “I’m jealous” or “I’m broken”, notice what’s actually happening in your body, heart and mind. From there, honesty, gratitude and self-trust become possible.
If language can keep you trapped, it can also set you free – so what might change if you started speaking to yourself with more truth and kindness?
