From High-Functioning Drinker to Sober Coach: Angela Pugh on Addiction Unlimited
Episode Overview
- Rock bottom is less about one dramatic event and more about the internal moment you decide something has to change.
- Early recovery can be built on simple actions: show up, listen, and let people with experience guide you.
- Credentials matter far less to clients than authenticity, consistency, and lived experience.
- Coaching tools and a forward-focused approach can be especially useful in the early stages of sobriety.
- Matching the energy once spent on addiction with equal effort in recovery can unlock seemingly unlimited potential.
“If you get willing to sacrifice as much for your recovery as you’re willing to sacrifice for your addiction, you’re unstoppable.”
How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This chat between host Blu Robinson and guest Angela Pugh gives a very down‑to‑earth answer. Angela is a recovering alcoholic, Master Coach, speaker and host of Addiction Unlimited. She talks about being a “high‑functioning” drinker with the flashy car and great job, while feeling completely broken inside. Her turning point came after a 70‑mph drink‑driving crash where, for a few minutes, she was convinced she’d killed another driver.
The realisation that she might have destroyed someone else’s life – and her mum’s – became her line in the sand. From there, you’ll hear how she walked into AA at 33 with nothing but fear and a tiny bit of willingness. She describes finding her “people” in those rooms, feeling loved, accepted and finally understood. Daily meetings, sponsorship and a simple mantra of “sit down and shut up” kept her grounded while she rebuilt her life.
Angela also explains how recovery shaped her career. Starting as a life coach, she got drawn into intervention work, then into sober living homes and eventually into podcasting. She laughs about collecting professional letters after her name that clients never asked about, and why she now proudly leans into the title of coach rather than chasing credentials. One of the strongest threads through the conversation is willingness.
As Angela puts it, “If you get willing to sacrifice as much for your recovery as you’re willing to sacrifice for your addiction, you’re unstoppable.” If you’re worried you’re “too far gone”, or if AA feels scary or confusing, this chat might reassure you that you only need one thing to start: a tiny bit of willingness to try something different today. What could change if you put even half your old drinking effort into your recovery instead?
