Mind–Body Healing, Alcohol and the Quiet Power of Inner Wisdom
Episode Overview
- Reducing alcohol gradually is presented as safer for the body than stopping suddenly, which can cause serious health problems.
- Alcohol may briefly lower anxiety and help sleep, but over time it tends to increase anxiety and disturb sleep.
- Peace of mind, love and a quieter mind are described as more reliable supports for sleep and recovery than alcohol.
- Gratitude and living more in the present moment are shared as simple ways to lift mood and move life in a healthier direction.
- A key distinction is made between following fearful, busy thinking and following gentle inner wisdom that comes with a good feeling.
“Love is always the answer.”
What remarkable journeys have people faced head-on against addiction? This conversation brings together retired psychiatrist Dr Bill Pettit, host Harry Derbitsky and friends from the 3P in Africa Alcohol Healing Program to look at alcohol, anxiety and sleep through the lens of the mind–body connection. Speaking to Alcohol Healing groups in Uganda’s Nakivale Refugee Camp, Dr Pettit keeps things simple and human.
He explains how alcohol can first lower anxiety and help sleep, but over time does the opposite, leaving people more anxious and restless. That’s why he stresses coming off alcohol gradually while deepening understanding of thought and peace of mind: **"Peace of mind and love is much better than alcohol to help a person sleep."** Questions from participants are practical and honest: why did alcohol once help sleep but now stops it? Can alcohol kill mind or spirit?
Does mixing alcohol with lots of water still damage the body? These real-life concerns keep the conversation grounded for anyone dealing with cravings, withdrawals or physical symptoms. Throughout, the Three Principles and a strong spiritual perspective run through the talk. Dr Pettit contrasts being led by intellect versus inner wisdom, saying wisdom "always comes wrapped in a beautiful positive feeling" and that losing a gentle feeling is a sign it’s time to quiet down and return to the present.
Jim Beck and Larry Petersen add their own reflections on gratitude, a “state of meditation”, and choosing spirit over the noisy brain. For people in alcohol recovery, helpers, and those curious about more spiritual approaches, this session offers a calm, hopeful take: small shifts in understanding, a bit more gratitude, and trusting an inner guide can change the direction of a life.
It leaves you asking: what if your greatest healing starts with simply leaving your thinking alone until you feel better?
