This episode brings together two powerful Al-Anon talks from the Northwest Fellowship of the Spirit in Warm Beach, Washington, and offers a raw look at living with alcoholism from the family’s side. First up, Don R shares about his 42-year marriage, his wife’s long periods of sobriety, and her eventual return to heavy drinking.
He talks about building a "perfect" enabling set-up in the garage, making meticulous packed lunches for a hungover spouse, and carrying silent resentment that eventually showed up as heart trouble. Don’s story tracks how fear of conflict and constant caretaking kept him trapped, and how walking into his first Al-Anon meeting and getting a sponsor let him swap sleepless nights for honesty, connection and the 12 steps.
The second half is Ellen C, who introduces herself as an "enthusiastic, boundlessly grateful Al-Anon" and then walks through decades of loving Alcoholics: violent partners, a daughter whose alcoholism is intertwined with breast cancer and pain medication, and twin grandsons caught in addiction, prison and tragic death. She mixes humour with heartbreak, calling herself an "explainer" God now uses in service, and stresses that she’s an Al-Anon because she works the full programme, not because she simply loves an alcoholic.
Ellen’s talk reaches into grief, suicide, chronic stress and the difficult art of detaching with love, yet she keeps circling back to meetings, sponsorship, service and a God who wants her "happy, joyous and free".
