“The neurotransmitter travels across the space between the two neurons and, if accepted, attaches itself to a receptor on the other neuron. In order for this to work effectively, the message has to get through. And so the neuron must produce and release the neurotransmitter to push it into the gap. The neurotransmitter also has to hang out long enough in the gap so that it can bind to the receptor on the next neuron.”
