Barbers, Therapy, and Mental Health: A Candid Chat with Daniel Fairley II and John Thompson

I've been so much of a healthier person when I started accessing my feelings and being able to access my feelings. And like that's when even in the counselor, in the counseling role, you know, even in the counseling role, I hadn't talked about a lot of things until some of the kids that came in my office and would say, hey, you know, like this right here happened, and and it will always be like they're, you know, I guess, the trust that they had for me to come in, you know, just say, you know, like, hey, mr John, you know, this right here happened, right here.

What do barbershops and mental health have in common? More than you might think. In this episode of 'Speaking Candidly with Candace', millennials and fellow podcast hosts Daniel Fairley II and John Thompson sit down to discuss the often-overlooked topic of mental health among black men. They share personal stories and challenges that led them to create their own mental health podcast, aiming to break down barriers and stigma around seeking help.

Through their heartfelt conversation, they highlight how societal expectations of masculinity and the role of religion in the black community can complicate access to mental health resources. Fairley and Thompson emphasize the importance of prioritizing mental well-being, whether through professional therapy or even a meaningful chat with your barber. As Fairley puts it, 'Depression is number one, and a lot of them don't [realize it]'.

This episode is a call to action for black men to take their mental health seriously and seek the support they need. Tune in for an inspiring and honest discussion that might just change how you think about mental wellness.
