Six Years, Zero Bets: Gail’s Honest Look at Life After Gambling

Episode Overview

  • Telling the full truth about gambling harm can bring both painful consequences and huge relief from secrecy and shame.
  • Simple daily practices like stating, “Today is not going to be the day that I place that first bet,” help keep recovery front and centre.
  • Connection through meetings, messages, and peer support is crucial in early recovery and reminds people they are not alone.
  • Recovery doesn’t require changing everything at once; small, curious steps and self-compassion can build a new life over time.
  • Relationships may heal slowly or not at all, and part of recovery is accepting what can’t be controlled while still choosing to grow.
You don’t have to do it all at once. It’s okay to do small little baby steps… just start.

What can we learn from those who have battled addiction? In this candid chat, Christina sits down with long-time community member Gail F. to mark a huge milestone: six years since her last bet and the day she finally paid off all her gambling debt. Across two decades of secret gambling, Gail lost her home, her marriage, friendships, and very nearly her life.

She talks openly about the moment everything collapsed – foreclosure notices, title loans, and the terrifying 36 hours where she weighed up whether she even wanted to keep living. A neighbour’s suicide and memories of her dad’s time in AA nudged her towards a different choice: “We’re choosing life or death. We’re not choosing death. We’re choosing life.

So now how do we live life?” From there, you’ll hear how online meetings, texts from a counsellor (“Everything’s going to be fine as long as you don’t gamble today”), and women’s support spaces helped her realise she wasn’t crazy, weak, or alone – she had an addiction. Gail shares how she rebuilt from scratch at 56, living on her own for the first time, learning to see money as having value again, and slowly repairing relationships with her children.

These days she’s an admin for The Broke Girl Society, hosts multiple meetings, trains as a peer supporter, and is working towards a counselling qualification so people with gambling harm can get covered support. Her daily routine is simple but powerful: “Today is not going to be the day that I place that first bet,” followed each night by a little self-congratulation.

For anyone stuck in shame or fear of being found out, Gail’s message is clear: “You don’t have to do it all at once… just start.” Could today be your first small step away from gambling harm?
