Porn, Power and Our Kids: What No One Wants to Say Out Loud
Episode Overview
- Trafficking is rarely about abduction; coercion, family involvement and everyday kids are far more common than dramatic kidnap scenarios.
- Smartphones massively increase risk, with most middle and high school students approached by strangers online yet too scared to tell parents.
- Early exposure to pornography can act like a form of sexual trauma, wiring the brain towards control, domination and sometimes violent arousal.
- Porn and manosphere content often normalise humiliation and entitlement, shaping boys to see others as objects for their own gratification.
- Open, non-punitive conversations and knowing a child’s specific vulnerabilities are key defences parents can build to protect their kids.
“"When you give your children a cell phone, you have tens of thousands of strangers potentially in your home, in the same bedroom as your child."”
What can we learn from those who have battled addiction to porn and the wider culture that feeds it? This conversation on The Super Human Life brings together coach Frank Rich and child advocacy leader Natasha Nascimento for a hard-hitting look at how pornography, tech and warped ideas of masculinity are shaping boys – and putting children in real danger.
Natasha, founder of Redefining Refuge, calmly breaks down myths about child trafficking, stressing that, in 16 years of work, her organisation has "never had an abduction-related case". Instead, she explains how coercion, family involvement and a huge substance problem often sit behind abuse – and how smartphones have turned every child’s bedroom into "the white van" parents once warned about.
Frank connects this to his work with over 1,900 men in his Reboot Your Life coaching programme, noting that more than 80% describe early porn exposure, often between ages eight and eleven. Natasha shares how those first images can hit a child’s brain "almost the same" as a sexual assault, leaving boys trying to reclaim power later through control, domination and humiliation.
Together they unpack recent high-profile cases, from a 15-year-old facing seven felony counts to university scandals and the influence of figures like the Tate brothers. Rather than sensationalising, they ask the harder question: "Where did you learn these behaviours?" and why pornography’s normalisation of degrading, violent sex is being ignored.
Parents, in particular, get practical guidance: keep phones, but keep calm; build open dialogue; and know your child’s vulnerabilities better than anyone, because as Natasha warns, "there are a lot of bad people out there that are skilled at knowing what your children's vulnerabilities are." If you care about recovery, kids’ safety and what today’s boys are being taught about sex, power and love, this episode might leave you asking: what conversations do you need to start at home today?
