Step Out of Judgment: Simone Milasas on Questions, Allowance and Being Yourself
Episode Overview
- Switching from hunting for the "right" answer to asking open questions can create more ease in work, relationships and mental health.
- Judgment of self and others fuels suffering; noticing when judgment shows up and asking another question can shift the energy.
- Highly sensitive people often pick up others’ emotions, so asking "Who does this belong to?" helps separate personal feelings from what’s absorbed.
- The practice of "ask and receive" involves daily requests to the universe and a willingness to receive more, including support from nature and the body.
- Cultivating trust, honour, gratitude, vulnerability and allowance with yourself lays the groundwork for more expansive and joyful relationships.
“What if we could all be these magical creatures and just miracles everywhere because we’re no longer choosing judgement and we’re actually choosing to be ourselves?”
How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety and better mental health when judgment is loud and constant? This conversation between psychologist and addiction specialist Dr Adriana Popescu and business leader and author Simone Milasas circles right around that question.
Simone shares how, as a teenager in Sydney, she looked at school, gossip and expectations and thought, “There has to be something else.” That question pushed her to travel the globe, live on almost no money, and keep asking how other people chose to live. Those early years of restlessness, countless jobs and a craving for something different eventually led her to create a merchandise brand called Good Vibes For You and to connect with Access Consciousness founder Gary Douglas.
A big theme here is swapping the hunt for the “right” answer for the practice of constant questioning. Simone and Adriana talk about how school, family and society drill us to decide, conclude and prove we’re right, while internally many people secretly believe they’re wrong. Simone’s take?
“What if we could all be these magical creatures and just miracles everywhere because we’re no longer choosing judgement and we’re actually choosing to be ourselves?” They unpack tools such as asking “Who does this belong to?” when heavy feelings show up, especially for highly sensitive people and healers who absorb others’ emotions. Adriana links this directly to burnout in helping professions and the myth that it’s anyone’s job to “fix” another person.
The pair also touch on relationships and the Access Consciousness “five elements of intimacy” – trust, honour, gratitude, vulnerability and allowance – as something to cultivate with yourself before expecting it from anyone else. If you’re tired of judging yourself, stuck in people-pleasing, or trying to hold everyone else together, this honest chat might have you asking: what if there really is something else possible for you today?
