You’re Not God: Scott H. Silverman on Letting Go, Sobriety and Second Chances
Episode Overview
- Letting go of control and asking for help can turn a suicidal crisis into the first step toward long-term recovery.
- Leaving a stressful or unhealthy work environment may be essential for sustaining sobriety.
- Service work and volunteering can give structure, purpose and connection that support staying alcohol- and drug-free.
- Practical help with basics like appearance, interview skills and confidence can change the future for people coming out of homelessness or prison.
- Families trying to manage a loved one’s addiction alone often need to step back and involve experienced professionals instead of trying to be “God” for them.
“"There's hope and there's help. And three of the hardest words in the English language are, 'I need help.'"”
What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? This conversation between Dr. Cali Estes and guest Scott H. Silverman gives a raw, funny, and very human answer. Scott, a CNN Hero, crisis coach and long-time recovery advocate, talks openly about going from a high-pressure role in his family’s clothing business to blackouts, heavy drug use, and standing on a 44th-floor ledge in New York ready to end his life.
His turning point comes when he steps back from that window, calls his wife, and says he’s ready for help. From there, he enters treatment and begins a sobriety journey that dates back to 1984. You’ll hear how Scott swapped a hundred-hour work week and cocaine for service work, daily meetings, and eventually founding his own non-profit, Second Chance, to help people coming out of jail and homelessness get jobs, housing and stability.
He shares how a simple offer to help one man with a haircut, a shirt and some interview practice led to a whole employment programme for people everyone else had written off. Scott also talks about his book, *You’re Not God: That Job Is Taken*, aimed at both parents who feel they must control a struggling child and leaders who act like they run the universe.
Written in plain language and rooted in lived experience, it pushes a simple idea: trying to play God for others doesn’t work. The tone stays conversational and light, even as they talk about suicide, addiction, and grief, with Scott joking about being a “retired, unlicensed pharmacist” and learning to love the word “no”. It’s ideal for anyone in recovery, families worried about a loved one, or people curious about turning pain into purpose.
After all, if Scott can step back from a window and build a life of service, what might be possible for you today?
