Episode Overview

  • Alcohol became Anthony’s way to silence anxiety and feel like he belonged, but led to DUIs, blackouts, and serious consequences.
  • A weekend in jail and fear of losing his family and medical career pushed him towards AA and structured monitoring.
  • Working with a sponsor and attending in-person meetings shifted sobriety from miserable "white-knuckling" to genuine relief.
  • The 12 steps, especially inventory, amends, and daily service, helped him see selfishness and control as core issues to keep working on.
  • Staying sober now depends on regular meetings, helping newcomers, and treating AA and community as a higher power that actually works.
“"You can't think your way into a new way of acting; you have to act your way into a new way of thinking."”

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? Anthony H shares a raw, funny, and honest account of how his drinking nearly cost him everything, just as his life on paper looked like a success story.

Speaking at the PC Alano Saturday Night Live Speaker Meeting on the eve of his two-year sobriety anniversary, Anthony talks about growing up with an addicted mum, early DUIs, and using alcohol to quiet crippling anxiety and a constant sense of not fitting in.

He jokes about joining the Marine Corps as a "geographical relocation" and realising, "Whoops… Marines tend to drink a lot." His turning point is grim and strangely comic: a weekend in jail, staring at a "red, bloody booger on the wall" and realising that this was what his life had become.

From there, he describes how court-mandated monitoring, marital crisis and the threat of losing his medical career pushed him towards AA, even though he planned to go back to "drink like a gentleman". Anthony walks through the 12 steps in practical, down-to-earth language.

He talks about making amends that revealed things he didn’t even remember, seeing selfishness as a common thread, and learning that, "You can't think your way into a new way of acting; you have to act your way into a new way of thinking." His higher power started out simply as the evidence that AA works better than other treatments.

Now, with two years sober, a growing family, a career in neurology and sponsees of his own, Anthony stresses meetings, service, and community as the things that keep him off what he calls the downward escalator of alcoholism. If you’ve ever wondered whether AA can work for someone who doesn’t think they’re "that bad" or doesn’t like the God talk, this one might give you something to think about.
