Tony Hoffman's Path from Addiction to BMX Glory on The Funky Brain Business Podcast
For me, drugs became a coping mechanism that my brain couldn't turn off the craving for because it was so effective. Yet, despite that, I still couldn't let go of the craving because of the part of my brain where the craving switch is controlled, it doesn't operate the same as a normal person's.
Tony Hoffman’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. A former BMX Elite Pro, Tony began his career with a promising future, only to see it derailed by addiction. Starting with alcohol and marijuana in high school, his substance abuse escalated to prescription drugs, leading to a life that spiraled out of control. By 2004, Tony found himself in prison for home invasion armed robbery. It was behind bars that he decided to reclaim his life.
In this episode of The Funky Brain Business Podcast, hosted by Dennis Berry, Tony opens up about his incredible transformation from a struggling addict to a celebrated athlete and motivational speaker. He shares how he overcame social anxiety and depression through spirituality and self-reflection, ultimately finding his way back to the BMX track.
His comeback was nothing short of spectacular—he placed 2nd at the 2016 BMX World Championship and coached Brooke Crain to a 4th place finish at the Rio Olympic Games. Beyond his athletic achievements, Tony founded The Freewheel Project, a non-profit organization that uses action sports to help at-risk youth. He also hosts The One Choice Podcast, where he inspires others battling addiction.
Tony's story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of accountability and self-reflection in overcoming life's toughest challenges. Tune in to hear how Tony turned his life around and continues to make a difference.
