Chronic Pain, Narcissistic Abuse and What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You

Episode Overview

  • Chronic pain can arise from neuroplastic changes and nervous system sensitisation rather than structural damage alone.
  • Traditional treatments may help briefly by increasing feelings of safety, but often miss the emotional and psychological roots of symptoms.
  • Expressive journalling about childhood, current stress and personality traits can release repressed emotions and reduce pain.
  • Traits like people-pleasing and perfectionism, often shaped by narcissistic abuse, keep anger and hurt buried and can fuel chronic symptoms.
  • Learning to treat yourself with honesty and kindness, and reducing fear around symptoms, can help the brain unlearn pain patterns.
Pain is like a message from your nervous system saying things are on fire because you are not treating yourself with kindness and you’re not putting yourself first.

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey when chronic pain is also screaming for attention? This conversation between coach and host Adriana Bucci and pain elimination coach Scotty Stiles shows how emotional pain, narcissistic abuse and years of physical symptoms can collide in one nervous system.

Scotty shares 15+ years of debilitating symptoms – back and hip pain, tinnitus, post-viral issues like long COVID, anxiety, OCD-style looping thoughts and even strange sensations such as a sour taste in his mouth. After “doing what everybody tells you to do” – from osteopaths and chiropractors to energy healers and liver packs – he hit a wall, leaving work, becoming agoraphobic and lying on the floor in constant pain.

Everything shifted when he came across Dr John Sarno’s mind–body work: “Within a week I had symptom reduction… a pain that I’d had for two or three years on a daily basis.” Adriana relates with her own story of using a mind–body app, initially thinking “this is bullshit”, then watching lifelong pain conditions ease once she grasped that many symptoms were neuroplastic rather than structural.

The pair break down ideas like TMS, nervous system sensitisation and symptom imperative, and why dropping fear can calm the body more than yet another specialist. They also link chronic symptoms with childhood trauma, people-pleasing, perfectionism and narcissistic abuse, where emotions are shamed and anger has to go underground. Adriana and Scotty talk journalling as a practical tool for releasing repressed feelings, rebuilding self-trust and even spotting emotional red flags in manipulative relationships.

As Scotty puts it, pain can be “a message from your nervous system saying… you are not treating yourself with kindness.” If you’ve left a toxic relationship or family system and now feel like your body is falling apart, this episode might help you ask a different question: what is your pain trying to say about how you treat yourself?
