From Purpose to Practice: Building Your Five‑P Plan for Recovery and Life

Episode Overview

  • Use your Life Wheel scores to pinpoint weak areas and link them to clear roles and purposes.
  • Write your plans by hand to connect conscious and subconscious thinking and make goals more tangible.
  • Prioritise what is both urgent and important, then work steadily on important long‑term goals.
  • Accept setbacks and failure as part of the process, using them as lessons rather than reasons to quit.
  • Build excellence through purpose, passion, perseverance, choice, commitment, support and optimism.
To know and not to do is really not to know.

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? For this series, the answer keeps coming back to structure, purpose, and practice – and this instalment leans hard into all three. Following on from last week’s focus on purpose, this episode takes that insight and turns it into a concrete, written plan.

Using scores from the Life Wheel as a starting point, the host talks through how to spot the weakest areas in life, link them to personal roles, and then build a weekly and daily plan that actually reflects what matters most in recovery and beyond. You’ll hear a simple but powerful framework built around the “five Ps”: **purpose, plan, practice, persevere, providence**.

As the host explains, “if you constantly work towards this on a daily basis in your planning, you will find the success that you are yearning for.” The message is clear: purpose gives direction, but planning and daily repetition are what turn good intentions into new habits. There’s a strong emphasis on handwriting plans rather than just relying on apps and reminders.

Writing, the host says, “bridges the conscious and subconscious mind,” making your goals feel more real and harder to ignore. A personal story about a storm and a power cut shows how even the best plans get disrupted, and how prioritising the “urgent and important” helps you stay on track instead of giving up. The second half of the episode widens out into what makes someone capable of excellence: purpose, passion, perseverance, choice, commitment, failure, support, and optimism.

Failure is reframed as “our greatest teacher,” and optimism as the faith that the life you’re working towards is already forming in front of you. Anyone in recovery who’s tired of vague goals and wants a practical, pen-on-paper way to build an extraordinary life will find plenty to work with here. So, when are you going to sit down and plan your week?
