Balancing Your Wheel of Life on the Road to Recovery
Episode Overview
- Assess each life domain honestly using a 0–10 scale to understand your true starting point.
- Use the Wheel of Life as a visual way to spot major deficits that unbalance your recovery and daily life.
- Focus first on areas with the lowest scores or most urgent needs to strengthen the overall "wheel."
- Seek feedback from family members to compare self-perception with how others experience you.
- Set realistic plans for change, especially around nutrition, exercise, work and home tasks, rather than overpromising on time and effort.
“We can't go anywhere until we know where we are right now.”
Curious about how others manage their sobriety journey alongside everyday life? This fifth episode of "Skills in the Key of Life" focuses on building practical life skills through honest self-assessment, giving people in recovery a structured way to check where they are and where they'd like to be.
The episode returns to the idea of life "domains" – physical health, mental health, career, family, fun and recreation – and introduces the Wheel of Life tool as a way to see how balanced things really are. The host uses a simple roadmap metaphor: you can't reach any destination if you don't first know your starting point.
Or as they put it, "We can't go anywhere until we know where we are right now." Drawing on the Buddhist Wheel of Life and its focus on suffering, cause, prevention and a path out of misery, the episode connects these ideas with recovery.
You're encouraged to rate each domain from 0 to 10 and be brutally honest, even if that means admitting your physical health is a "3" because you’re skipping the gym, eating sugary snacks and running on empty. There’s plenty of practical chat: looking at nutrition choices, choosing realistic exercise schedules, reassessing a career that feels stuck, or noticing where family and home life have slipped into complacency.
The host suggests actively seeking feedback from loved ones, since "we may see ourselves in one way and somebody else may see us in another." Visually, the Wheel of Life becomes a reminder that big deficits – those "1s" and "2s" – create holes that stop the wheel from turning smoothly. The suggestion is to start with the lowest scores or the most urgent issues, gradually working towards balance so life, and recovery, feel less jagged and more steady.
It’s a calm, reflective episode for anyone wanting practical structure around recovery and everyday living. Where might your own wheel be flat, and what could change if you faced those gaps honestly?
