From Psych Wards to Punchlines: Lizzie Allan's Road to Recovery
“I was always kind of running from one thing to the next, trying to prove myself or get acceptance and approval, but could never get it. So I went off to Morocco, and it was a really bad place for me and I did a week's work with children and then just, you know, managed to get some really strong hash. And you know, and I was in some sort of dangerous, potentially dangerous situations. Yes, I've been there, I thought, well, I thought it was very interesting, but yes, you're right, a lot of poverty going on, especially the horses and the donkeys I got.”
Imagine hitting rock bottom in a foreign country, only to find your way back through laughter. That's the remarkable story of Lizzie Allan, who joins host Dora Gosselin on the Soberoso podcast. Lizzie, a comedian and therapist, opens up about her tumultuous journey through addiction and mental health crises that spanned continents—from a psych ward in Thailand to turbulent times in Morocco and Manchester. She shares how sobriety transformed her life and mental well-being.
Now, with a decade of sobriety under her belt, Lizzie combines comedy and therapy in what she calls 'Hilarapy', helping others heal from their traumatic pasts. She also actively participates in the recovery community in White Rock, B.C., and will be hosting this year's Recovery Day B.C. Lizzie's story is a testament to the power of resilience and the healing potential of humor.
