Meth, Heroin, and the Power of Faith: Aaron’s Unfiltered Recovery Story

Episode Overview

  • Early use driven by insecurity and feeling like an outcast helped set the stage for later dependence.
  • Prescription opioids became a perceived solution for emotional and social struggles, quickly leading to daily use and withdrawal.
  • Repeated cycles of secular treatment without spiritual connection or full 12 Step work left Aaron vulnerable to relapse.
  • Faith-based treatment, a powerful spiritual experience, and daily application of the 12 Steps (especially moral inventory) supported lasting change.
  • Practising total honesty and refusing to compromise integrity, even with small behaviours, was key in building consistent sobriety.
Once I got honest with myself and with everybody around me, I started changing on a consistent basis.

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol and drugs after years of chaos, crime, and terrifying spiritual experiences? In this raw conversation, Aaron lays out his journey from teenage substance use to full-blown opioid, heroin, meth, and polysubstance addiction, painting a picture that’s equal parts shocking and relatable for anyone who's felt out of place and turned to chemicals for confidence.

You’ll hear how a baseball injury led to hydrocodone, which Aaron describes as "the magic pill" that fixed his insecurity, social anxiety, and lack of confidence, and how dependency crept in unnoticed until he was robbing, forging cheques, and pawning his mum’s jewellery to stay well. From there, the story moves through black tar heroin runs, homemade meth labs, overdoses, septic shock, and jail cells, all while his family suffered alongside him.

One of the most gripping parts is Aaron’s account of meth-fuelled psychosis and what he’s convinced were spiritual attacks on himself and his children: "Whenever my meth use was like at its worst and I started having these attacks, my children would also get attacked." Those experiences, along with the collapse of his family life, finally pushed him toward a faith-based treatment centre.

The tone shifts as Aaron describes a 45-minute spiritual encounter he believes came directly from Jesus, and how that moment, followed by genuinely working the 12 Steps rather than just coasting, changed the way he approaches recovery.

He talks about daily moral inventory, praying specifically for help with character defects, and the huge role of rigorous honesty: stopping all lying, even about small things, so the addiction had “nowhere to hide.” For anyone curious about how faith, honesty, and the 12 Steps can fit together in recovery, Aaron’s story offers a gritty, unvarnished look at both the darkness and the light.

Could his commitment to integrity and spiritual growth spark a fresh way of looking at your own recovery journey?
