From College Partying to CPS: Courtney’s Journey Back to Her Daughter

Episode Overview

  • Curiosity and social drinking can quietly progress into daily dependence, even without early trauma.
  • Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous, including seizures, and often requires medical detox rather than white-knuckling it.
  • Pregnancy and parenthood can offer powerful motivation for change, but without a programme and support, relapse is highly likely.
  • CPS involvement may feel like the end, yet structured requirements, court, and counselling can become a pathway back to recovery and reunification.
  • Finding the right recovery community and home group, and working the steps with honesty, helps turn intentions into lasting change.
“You can't help someone that's not wanting to participate in their own rescue.”

Get ready to be moved by real-life accounts of addiction, relapse, and hard-won sobriety, as Courtney shares how a privileged, high-achieving childhood spun into meth addiction and a CPS case. Growing up in Dallas with "everything on a silver platter," she had strict parents, top grades, church every week, and big dreams of becoming a forensic psychologist. Drinking and drugs barely featured in her teens. College changed everything.

A co-ed dorm, Greek life, raves and tailgates opened the door to alcohol, Xanax, cocaine and club drugs. Courtney jokes that, at first, she was "just doing what every 18-year-old does when they're first away from home," driven by curiosity rather than pain. But weekend partying became daily drinking, misdemeanour charges piled up, and her parents were bailing her out as often as they were paying tuition.

Things escalated further when she began mixing heavy vodka use with cocaine to stay functional at her night-shift job. The turning point came when cocaine ran out and her dealer offered meth. The drug she’d always sworn she’d never touch quickly became, in her words, her "true love affair" and led to IV use, job loss, eviction notices, and, ultimately, CPS at her door.

The most heartbreaking part of her story centres on losing custody of her daughter after a CPS visit and later arrests, including assaulting her mum while drunk and trying to say goodbye. Courtney explains that her child became both her purpose and her reason for finally committing to recovery: "I would not be clean if it wasn't for her.

I did not value myself enough." She talks about rehab, drug court, NA and AA meetings, working the steps, and the long, slow process of reunification. This episode speaks directly to parents in addiction, adult children of drinkers, and anyone wondering if they’re "too far gone"—because Courtney’s message is clear: you aren’t. Could her journey be the nudge you need to ask for help?
