You’ll hear how childhood instability, spiritual fear and a need to "absorb people's pain" pushed her towards nursing, then how relentless bedside trauma, no breaks, and the pressure to cope led to Xanax and alcohol: "Xanax and alcohol are like a terrible, terrible combination." As her dependence deepened into opioids, heroin and meth, she began stealing drugs from work, lost her career, and stepped fully into street life with a partner who dealt large amounts of meth.
Chastidy talks frankly about the seductive illusion of power in that world, and the way meth felt tied to something dark: "We were a bunch of witches and warlocks… worshipping it, putting it as a priority over sleep, eating, sanity, relationships." She describes terrifying encounters she interprets as demonic presences, contrasted with fleeting, romantic-feeling nights that made everything even more confusing.
Immersing herself in the Bible, she reframes addiction as a kind of spiritual "pharmakia" and finds comfort in the idea that "I’m not the sacrifice… Jesus was the sacrifice." Today, she’s back in healthcare, teaching nursing, running a practice, and offering medication-assisted treatment, using her lived experience openly with patients: "Did you know I’m in recovery… for meth and heroin?"
