You Have a Team: Holiday Grief, Family Recovery and Finding Your People
Episode Overview
- There is no single correct path to recovery; families can heal by working together as a "home team" rather than separating into completely separate programmes.
- Strong emotions like anger and guilt after a loss can be channelled into service, such as supporting homeless people with clothing and warmth.
- Gratitude lists and simple daily self-check-ins can help shift focus from scarcity to abundance, especially during stressful seasons.
- Feeling alone is common, but joining supportive communities and teams can turn people from passive "consumers" of pain into active "producers" of hope.
- Even small actions—sharing experiences, volunteering, or connecting with others—can become the spark that helps someone else move forward in sobriety.
“This is your team. Team Addict to Athlete is yours.”
How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This episode of Addict II Athlete brings that question to life with raw emotion, holiday stress, and a powerful reminder that no one has to do recovery alone. Coach Blu Robinson and athletic director Marissa Robinson hold a live call-in session, inviting athletes and supporters to share what it’s like facing the holidays sober.
You’ll hear Coach Blu push back against the idea that there’s only one acceptable path to recovery, especially for families. He questions approaches that tell loved ones to simply detach and “leave them alone,” arguing instead for a united “home team” where families rebuild together with rules, boundaries and support. The heart of the episode comes from two callers. Selena shares the heartbreaking news of a cousin who died homeless, cold and alone in Salt Lake.
Her grief, anger and guilt are palpable as she wonders what might have happened if she’d known he was on the streets. Coach Blu and Marissa help her shift from consuming the pain to turning it into action, brainstorming a coat and warmth drive in partnership with another recovery group so his death can inspire help for others. Later, Dawn calls in from Tennessee, describing a month loaded with loss, an “empty feeling” and the temptation to numb out.
She talks about caring for her elderly parents, missing her dog Snoop, starting ‘Snoop’s Paws and Pals’ to help others run with their dogs, and still feeling stuck. Coach Blu and Marissa steer her toward gratitude, agency and connection, welcoming her fully into the Addict II Athlete home base as a reminder that she truly has a team.
If you’ve ever felt alone in recovery, angry at the past or unsure how to help, this conversation might leave you asking: what small action could you turn into your own new team tradition?
