Lifting, Food and Real Self‑Respect with Emily Frisella (Part One)

Episode Overview

  • Strength training and eating more can improve body composition and confidence far better than endless cardio and starvation diets.
  • The scale is a poor measure of progress; focusing on how you feel, move and function is far more helpful, especially in recovery.
  • Each body responds differently to diets and macros, so copying a friend or an online calculator often leads to frustration.
  • Early sobriety often includes healthy weight gain; reframing this as nourishment rather than failure can keep people from giving up.
  • Real self-respect means taking consistent action through movement and food choices, rather than chasing quick fixes or comforting lies.
"You can't feel good about yourself when you're not doing shit to take care of yourself."

How do people cope with the challenges of staying sober and still feel good in their own skin? This chat on The Elevate Experience pulls that question apart through fitness, food, and self-respect rather than before-and-after photos. Guest Emily Frisella joins host Angie Manson and co-host Dallas Terrell to talk about how ideas around women’s bodies and health have shifted from the “starve to be skinny” era to lifting heavy, eating more, and focusing on how you feel.

Emily explains how she moved from cardio-only and obsession with the scale to strength training, a protein-rich diet, and caring way less about the number and way more about body composition and energy. You’ll hear Emily describe going from six rigid meals a day and crying over tilapia and broccoli in her parents’ kitchen to a more relaxed, high-protein routine that actually fits real life and business.

Dallas brings in his own experience as a former client and now counsellor and coach, including the shock of gaining healthy weight in early recovery and helping clients reframe “getting bigger” as getting nourished. The conversation hits hard on mixed messages around body positivity, junk food, and quick-fix diets.

Emily questions the idea that you can feel great while treating your body badly and argues that, “to love yourself is actually take care of yourself”, especially for people in recovery whose bodies are already stressed. For anyone sober, getting sober, or rebuilding their health after substance use, this episode blends tough love, humour and practical examples of how movement and food can genuinely support mood, confidence and long-term recovery.

It might have you asking yourself: are you really looking after the body you’re hoping will carry you into a better life?
