Breaking Free Graduates Share the Gift of an Alcohol-Free Life
Episode Overview
- Structured programmes and small-group support can turn a daunting quit attempt into a manageable, shared journey.
- Education about addiction science, health risks and marketing tricks helps shift drinking from ‘normal’ to non-negotiable.
- Finding a ‘tribe within a tribe’ gives people day-to-day accountability, humour and comfort through wobble days.
- Coaching sessions help move beyond just stopping alcohol and towards defining what kind of life someone actually wants.
- Setting boundaries and carving out even one hour a day for yourself can be crucial, especially for busy women juggling work and family.
“It’s the best bloody gift I’ve given to myself. And sobriety is the gift that keeps on giving.”
Curious about how others manage their sobriety journey when life is already jam-packed? This panel chat from Tribe Sober’s Breaking Free programme pulls back the curtain on what structured support and community can really do for someone trying to ditch the drink.
Hosted by tribe leader Janet Gorond, the conversation brings together four Breaking Free graduates – Lynn from South Africa, Helen from the UK, Laurie from the US and Grania – each sharing how the programme slotted into very different lives.
Lynn’s humour and honesty stand out as she recalls escalating whisky habits and realising she “didn’t recognise” herself anymore, later calling Breaking Free “the best bloody gift I’ve given to myself.” Helen talks about the “tribe within a tribe” effect: that smaller group of people at the same stage who become sisters (and brothers) in sobriety, cheering each other through milestones and wobble days.
Her description of coaching as something that “puts your feet on the ground” shows how the programme goes beyond just stopping drinking and into building a new life. Laurie brings a more scientific angle, saying that “education is power” and explaining how learning about dopamine, cancer risks and big alcohol marketing helped her see herself as a rebel, not a deprived non-drinker.
Her story about driving through the desert on her 62nd sober day, vowing to let her desire for alcohol “go to the grave” with her brother, adds a deeply emotional note. Grania, a busy career woman and mum, speaks to those who feel they’re too busy, stressing the importance of boundaries and taking “one hour a day” for yourself. Together, they show that Breaking Free isn’t just about white-knuckling abstinence; it’s about friendship, structure, humour and a clear path forward.
If you’ve ever thought, “I can’t afford it”, “my partner drinks” or “I’m scared I’ll fail”, this conversation might make you ask a different question: what if this is the best gift you could give yourself?
