Heal It All: Sheila Wach on Turning Pain Into Spiritual Magic
Episode Overview
- Healing requires going directly into the pain: “Heal it. Heal it. All of it… Take someone's hand and say, I need to talk about this.”
- It is “not your fault you're an addict or an alcoholic”; responsibility begins with choosing to do something about it.
- The 12 steps can be viewed as a progression from surrender and purging, through healing and teachability, to becoming a messenger for others.
- Clinging to suffering and old armour keeps people from love; letting others see inside and offering feelings words opens the door to change.
- Spiritual practice, conscious contact and a focus on love over fear can shift life from mere survival into what Sheila calls self-mastery and “magic”.
“Heal it. Heal it. All of it. Go there. Go the distance. Find your magic. Because it's there within you.”
What can we learn from those who have battled addiction? In this conversation, Omar Pinto sits down with long-time friend and fellow Costa Rica resident, Sheila Wach, whose story moves from violent childhood, high-powered corporate life and near-death moments, through relapse and marijuana “maintenance”, into deep recovery and spiritual growth. Sheila shares how growing up in a “violent alcoholic family” taught her that love meant pain, and how that early wiring fed her drinking and later drug use.
Despite a successful career in Canadian television and later on luxury yachts, she describes a secret life of “silent suffering” and controlled drinking that no one around her recognised as a problem. Her turning points are raw and memorable – from hanging “with two tyres over a cliffside edge” on Costa Rica’s mountain roads to stepping into AA with no meetings nearby and building a tiny English-speaking fellowship from scratch.
She talks frankly about marrying an alcoholic, his eventual death, and the moment she realised she was “more afraid to live and more afraid to die” all at once. These days Sheila calls herself a spiritual mentor and “way shower”, blending addiction science, neuroscience, 12-step work and consciousness studies. Her core message is simple and fierce: “Heal it. Heal it. All of it. Go there. Go the distance.
Find your magic.” She explains why clinging to suffering keeps people stuck, why some in recovery are still “not awake”, and how real change means purging old stories, giving feelings words, and letting others hold your hand. If you're drawn to recovery conversations that mix AA wisdom, science, spirituality and a bit of Costa Rican sunshine, this one might get you reaching for a notebook and asking yourself where your own “magic” is hiding.
