Sobriety, Spiritual Grounding and Healing the "Closet" of the Body

Episode Overview

  • Ask a better question than "Am I drinking too much?" by honestly considering whether life could be better physically and emotionally without alcohol.
  • See the body as storing unprocessed emotions such as grief, resentment and anger, and recognise how these can contribute to illness and addictive behaviour.
  • Use simple grounding tools – like putting bare feet on the earth, short meditations and gentle tapping – to calm the nervous system and stay present.
  • Try practical brain-balancing tricks such as bouncing tennis balls while counting aloud to shift out of fight-or-flight and into clearer thinking.
  • Work with the inner child by validating feelings and offering comfort, and practise discernment when choosing spiritual teachers or practices.
The physical body is like this giant closet that stores all of our emotional content.

What emotional and inspiring tales of recovery are out there? This conversation between host Janey Lee Grace and mystic healer Sonja Grace brings together long-term sobriety, spiritual practice and very practical grounding tools. Janey sets the scene by chatting about recent events, the joy of missing out, and the public debate around alcohol sparked by Stephen Bartlett’s brief return to drinking.

She shares her own view that life without alcohol feels like finally stepping out of sinking sand and into real freedom, and reminds you to ask the more honest question: "Could my life be better physically and emotionally without alcohol?" Sonja, who has around 45 years of sobriety, talks about her work as an "energy surgeon", helping people understand how emotions lodge in the body.

As she puts it, "The physical body is like this giant closet that stores all of our emotional content." She links addiction to unprocessed grief, resentment and fear, and to a wider culture hooked on phones, social media, substances and even spiritual trends. The pair look at what Sonja calls "spiritual psychosis" – people who know all the language of chakras, guides and past lives yet have no real grounding or regular practice.

Janey recognises herself in this from her drinking days, when she could talk about self-love and meditation but couldn’t actually sit with herself. For anyone in recovery who feels wobbly, Sonja offers simple tools: grounding meditations, stepping outside barefoot, tapping around the head and face, playful tennis-ball exercises to calm the brain, and talking kindly to the inner child. She stresses discernment too – choosing spiritual teachers carefully and checking in with your own intuition.

If you’ve quit drinking or are sober curious and want to bring genuine spiritual practice into your life (rather than just the language of it), this honest chat might get you asking: what small grounding habit could you start today?
