Solving the Unsolvable: Mark Beebe on Surrender, Grief and Real Recovery

Episode Overview

  • Sheer willpower and discipline often fail against addiction and deep life crises.
  • Seeing a problem as "unsolvable" can be the starting point for genuine recovery.
  • Al-Anon shifts focus from fixing others to facing your own feelings, pain and behaviour.
  • Radical surrender to a power greater than oneself is presented as essential, with Jesus named as that source of salvation.
  • Grief and loss strip away pride and force the question of who or what you truly trust.
Information knowledge and wisdom is not your salvation. Your salvation has a name, and his name is Jesus.

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol, control, and constant self-reliance? This talk with Mark Beebe looks at that exact question through the idea of "solving the unsolvable". Mark speaks to anyone who’s ever tried to push harder, read more, or "work smarter" to fix life’s biggest crises – addiction, a shattered marriage, a child in trouble, sudden death, illness, or grief that simply refuses to make sense.

He points out how many people treat drinking, using, or compulsive behaviours as problems of discipline, believing, "If I just had enough willpower, I could sort this." When that fails, the shame is brutal: "If you can't get that discipline in you, you're a loser.

You're a failure." You’ll hear him talk candidly about showing up at Al-Anon looking for tips to fix someone else, only to be told, "There’s nothing we can do about your spouse, but there’s plenty we can do with you." That gentle but uncomfortable shift – from controlling others to facing your own pain – becomes the doorway to recognising powerlessness.

From there, Mark introduces what he calls "radical surrender" and a "power greater than me", drawing on the story of AA co-founder Bill W. and on a Christ-centred view of recovery. He stresses that information, knowledge and self-effort "is not your salvation. Your salvation has a name, and his name is Jesus." Pride, he suggests, is often the first casualty in genuine recovery, especially when grief strips away the illusion that life is manageable on our own.

This episode is aimed at people wrestling with addiction, family chaos or deep loss, who may be suspicious of God, church, or the idea of surrender. If you’ve been trying to solve the unsolvable with sheer effort, could it be time to ask who – or what – you’re actually trusting?
