“How much of your life have you actually given to God? Better yet, a better question. How much of your life have you not given to God?”
What drives someone to seek a life without numbing out on alcohol, sin, or spiritual half-measures? In "Staying Filled Part 1", Bishop Lance Johnson speaks straight to people who’ve tasted freedom from addiction and destructive habits, yet still feel stuck in repeating patterns. Drawing on his own past as an alcoholic and drug addict, Lance challenges anyone following Jesus to look honestly at how much of their life is truly surrendered.
He asks, "How much of your life have you actually given to God? Better yet, a better question. How much of your life have you not given to God?" You’ll hear him break down the idea of giving the devil "place"—not full possession, but little rooms in your heart where habits like lust, unforgiveness, jealousy, or angry outbursts are carefully protected rather than handed over.
The episode centres on staying full of the Holy Spirit, not just having sporadic spiritual highs. Lance contrasts chasing revival "like a junkie chases a needle" with becoming the person through whom God’s river flows: "Instead of chasing after revival, you become revival." He explains how the Holy Spirit changes perception, thinking and desires, and how ongoing submission to God closes those openings where destructive behaviours creep back in.
There’s also a stark comparison between being "drunk with wine" and being filled with the Spirit. Using vivid humour, Lance shows how alcohol influences attitude, choices and vision, then points out that being filled with the Holy Spirit is meant to affect a person’s whole life in an even deeper way.
If you’re wrestling with addiction, relapse, or that one habit you just don’t want to surrender, this teaching pushes you to ask: what room in your life are you still reserving for the old you?
